New Painting Technique Inspired by Mr-Seo Logo

This Mr-Seo logo was created by graphic designer, Esther Kang, and it belongs to my boyfriend Greg's company, mr-seo.com. I love the logo and I've been looking as it a lot lately. To me, those white dots in a semi-circle are a glow of energy, it reminds me of growth and also of individuals and energy, all of us connected to each other (this is my own interpretation and not a reflection of mr-seo's) whether it be via the internet or just in life. This logo and it's glow has inspired me to use those little white dots in my new paintings. I'm a big believer that everything in our universe is connected. Everything is in a relationship with everything else. I like to use glowing elements in my work to represent this energy. And now I'm using the white dots as another element to represent energy and connection.

My week in Seattle

I've been in Seattle this past week. I've been helping my Mom who had double knee replacement surgery. She recently got out of a rehab center she'd been in for a month but she still needed a little help for this first week back home.

One great thing about being in Seattle, besides being able to see a couple friends I hadn't seen in a long time, is experiencing city life and art!

Alden Mason is one of my favorite Northwest artists and he is showing work at the Foster White gallery downtown. There is an article about him in the Seattle Times this morning. Here's a Mason quote from the article which I really liked:

"was wonderful because your hand is a smartass. You think 'I can draw figures and people with my eyes closed,' but when your eyes are closed, your hand puts the arm coming out of the leg or hip. Crazy things happen, which is what I like."

Reminded me of a conversation with one of my friends yesterday. She was talking about photography and the element of surprise one gets sometimes in a photo. The spontaneous elements that you don't plan for when shooting can be the best part of a photo! I agreed. That happens with painting. And it's one reason I sometimes paint with my left hand instead of my right. Like Mason, I like the crazy things that come out when you close your eyes and paint or use your less dominant hand, the unexpected lines and marks give the painting a freshness. A more spontaneous feel.

Painting Rocks and Garden Walls

When was the last time you painted rocks? It always reminds me of my childhood. We had a family beach cabin and in the summer time once in awhile we would collect beach rocks and sit and wile away the afternoon painting rocks. I always remember it as being fun! So that is what I did yesterday. Paint rocks. When they're finished, I'm going to put them in what we are calling the "circle garden". See below.

This is an old cement container that people would throw garbage in and burn. It sits right off the road in front of our property. But since we put a palapa roof right above it on the garage, we don't want anyone burning because it could catch the palapa on fire. So we decided to turn it from an eye sore into something pretty! A garden. We put a few desert plants that don't need much water in it. And I'm going to paint the sides soon with something colorful. Hopefully it will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood as people drive by.

Twinkly Star Detail

There's something about stars. Twinkly stars. I love them. And they add so much to the atmosphere in my Lyrical World paintings. I've been adding stars to my paintings off and on for quite sometime. I used them in my 2007 Jubelale painting and they looked like snowflakes. Snowflakes and stars are magical elements.
I almost forgot about the star detail today. I was sitting back and studying my painting and I was thinking "What does it need?" and it came to me....it needs some twinkly stars. So I added them to the Lyrical World and I loved it.

Painting Technique Videos

I've had people ask me how do you do that when they're looking at my paintings. Sometimes people think my paintings are prints. Other's think I've used airbrush on them. So I decided to make some videos to show some of the techniques I use in my paintings. You can view them at http://www.youtube.com/user/LindyGrugerHanson The first one is on how I start a painting and the second one is on using my less dominant hand (left hand) as a painting technique. On the video though it looks like I'm using my right hand cause for some reason it records it the opposite way than reality. There are three more videos that I've uploaded on creating texture and swirly lines in a painting. If you have some other ideas for videos, let me know!
